After care
It is very important to take good care of your tattoo. Not only to prevent health problems, but also to protect the quality of your tattoo.
Most artists give a brochure, which explains how to take care of your tattoo. Generally it comes down to this:- Remove the bandage two hours after the tattoo is completed.
- Wash gently with cool or lukewarm water. Using a mild antibacterial soap. Make sure your hands are clean before washing and that you don’t over soak the tattoo. Keep out of the direct spray of the shower.
- Pat dry. (Don’t rub)
- For 3 to 5 days or until tattoo is healed, apply Vitamin A&D Ointment or Bacitracin or Zinc Oxide Ointment 3 to 4 times daily after washing tattoo. Keep tattoo moist. If allergic to these ointments, use a water based lotion such as Curel. Don’t use to much ointment, this can pull color out of the tattoo.
- Avoid the sun, sea and swimming pool until your tattoo is healed.
- During the healing process flakes will occur. Do not pick at flakes or you may pull the color out. The tattoo usually takes one to three weeks to heal.
- If redness or swelling occurs use ice packages.
- It is very important to call a doctor if you have the slightest signs of infection.
- After healing use a high SPF sunblock to protect your tattoo from fading.
