First of all everybody experiences pain differently. But most people describe the sensation of getting a tattoo as similar to a kind of sting or pinch. Some people also experience a burning sensation (like sunburn).
The amount of pain also depends of the size and type of the tattoo, the skill of the artist, your own pain tolerance and the area where it is placed. In general tattooing over the bone, where the skin is thin hurts the most. The fleshy parts are least sensitive.
- The genitals are the most painful location for a tattoo.
- The sternum, ribs, hands and feet are very sensitive.
- Next are the ankles, lower back, neck, under arm, around the groin area and head.
- The least sensitive areas and generally most popular for that reason, are the upper arms or forearms, calves, shoulder blade, outer thigh and bottom.
