First always visit and talk to the tattoo artist. Find out if you are a good match.
Is he specialized in the kind of tattoo you want? Look at his portfolio. A good artist keeps track of his work and will be proud to show it to you. Talk to him about your design and where you want to place it.
Talk about the price. In America tattooing will cost between the $80 and $100 per hour. Some shops charge by piece, instead of by the hour. This may or may not be in your advantage. Most shops will not do a tattoo under $40.
Last but not least check out if the parlor is clean and organized. How does it feel to you? If it gives you a bad feeling, go somewhere else.
Here are some things you should check:
- Ask a tour and look around carefully if the establishment is clean.
- Check if there is an autoclave to sterilize the tattoo equipment.
- Does the artist wear disposable gloves?
- Is the artist vaccinated for Hepatitis B?
- Check if disposable sterile needles are used and are being disposed in appropriate boxes.
- Make sure fresh inks are used. Inks should come from a bottle and be poured into a cup specifically for your tattoo. The remaining ink should be thrown away.
Never try to give yourself or let a friend give you a tattoo at home. This is asking for trouble. You have a much higher chance of infection and it will hurt a lot more.
Believe me it is not worth the trouble.
