Several things have to be considered in deciding where to place your tattoo:
- Size of the tattoo
Big ones fit better on the back, chest and stomach. If you want to have several tattoos together in a certain body area; it is also better to choose the above mentioned areas.
- Do you want to show your tattoo to the public?
If not, better choose a spot that usually is covered with clothes.
Also remember that some employers do not allow tattoos to be seen. Better check first if your tattoo can cause problems in the kind of profession you work in. For instance the U.S. army and police have special guidelines where tattoos and what kind of tattoos are allowed.
- Some areas are more painful than others. Generally the areas where the skin is thin and close to the bone hurt the most. These areas include ankles, head, neck and the lower back.
Less painful are the chest, upper arm, shoulders and upper back.
- Skin in certain parts of the body tends to sag more with aging. A tattoo that looks great now, might look a lot less attractive in 30 years. Ask your tattoo artist for advice.
- Don’t put a tattoo on a body part where the skin is moved back and forward a lot. This will cause premature ageing of your tattoo.
An example is your ankle. Ankle tattoos are very popular. They look great in the summer. But if you put your tattoo right on the ankle your tattoo will tend to fade much quicker. Better let your tattoo artist put it a few inches above the ankle.
- A tattoo on your belly also isn’t a great idea if you are a girl who wants to have children in the future. The skin of your belly will be stretched a lot during your pregnancy and you can imagine what kind of damage this can do to your tattoo.
